Learn why the hummingbird has flown into your life as an animal totem!
If the fast flying hummingbird has buzzed into your life as an animal totem, become very aware of your surroundings and the joy that may be in store! This small bird approaches life with boundless energy. You can’t help but feel happy when you watch hummingbirds flying around from flower to flower. The hummingbird totem teaches us to go after what we want in life with zest and a light heart. The hummingbird sees opportunity all around and goes after exactly what it wants sometimes flying incredibly long distances or performing amazing feats like flying backwards. Those who have this bird as their totem might show great ability to respond quickly to situations and do so with a joyful heart.
Hummingbird Symbolism
Hummingbirds are considered an air symbol. When you observe the hummingbird in nature, you will find it whooshing from one thing to the next with seemingly endless energy. Their wings flap in the sign of the infinity symbol which confirms it’s message of eternity. They seem to defy gravity as they float around with great agility and ease. All of this makes the hummingbird seem supernatural in a way. They share a great message of having a “lightness of being.” When you embody the nature of the hummingbird, you find yourself releasing negativity much more easily, adapting to circumstances with grace, and making decisions swiftly and with no doubt.
Hummingbirds in Dreams
If the hummingbird is coming to you in your dreams or even as a sign in waking life, then you may want to take a look at how you are spending your energy throughout the day. Is it on worthless things that just take up your time, or enjoyable things that are needed and fulfilling? Hummingbirds spend a good part of their day flitting around from flower to flower gathering up much needed nectar. They are very small birds with a high metabolism. Most of their energy is spent flying and this is why they must feed constantly. They can consume up to twice their body weight in nectar each day. The hummingbird reminds us to make sure we are taking care of our needs so that we don’t end up feeling depleted and unhappy.
Messages or Medicine from Hummingbird:
If the hummingbird has entered your life as a messenger, it’s a good time to contemplate you inner joy and how you are spending your energy. Ask yourself:
-What can you do to bring more joy into your work, relationships and life?
-Are you “spending” your energy on things that are worthwhile?
-How can you reduce the aggravations and increase the playfulness?
-What things are worth your while? What have you given up that means a lot to you that you should work at bringing back into your life?
The hummingbird is a true symbol of living life with vigor and high energy. She shows us how to live with persistence and playfulness. Hummingbird’s message is one of confidence and taking action. It reminds us to not delay too long on making decisions as we might miss out on the sweetness that living a full life has to offer. The present moment is of the greatest importance and hummingbird may be telling you that now is the time to trust your spirit and know that opportunities are boundless and that joy is around every turn.
Ask yourself if you have been living life with zest and trying out opportunities as they come your way? Or have you been hiding and waiting for those opportunities to come and perhaps letting meaningful experiences pass you by? Have your fears been keeping you stuck from moving forward and living a more enjoyable life? Hummingbird reminds you to be more lighthearted as you take chances.

Hummingbird Totem
If you have hummingbird as your totem, you are most likely a person with high energy who loves your work and enjoys life. Hummingbird people always tend to know where to go next. They are highly mobile and move around as needed. Hummingbirds are associated with agility because they are able to move forwards, backwards, up and down, and side to side at a moments notice. They rarely hesitate, often sweeping in and taking action to gather food as quickly as possible. If you have hummingbird as a totem, then you might enjoy living a quick paced life, and you have the advantage of grabbing opportunities very easily. If you struggle with taking action, but the hummingbird has been showing up in your life, then this messenger may be reminding you to not hesitate but rather take action when the opportunity strikes!
Bring the joyful hummingbird into your life more often by planting hummingbird-friendly plants. Hummingbirds love these plants because their long tongues can draw on the sweet nectar. Order hummingbird plant seeds HERE for yourself or for a friend or loved one! Their favorite plants are Honeysuckle, Bee Balm, Sage, Phlox, Butterfly Bush, Daylily, Larkspur, Foxglove, Petunia, and Verbena.
If you are curious about animal totems and what messages they may have for you, I highly recommend Animal-Speak by Ted Andrews. I found this book to be highly valuable as a reference for recognizing and interpreting the signs and omens of nature. You will learn to meet and work with animals as totems and spirit guides by learning the language of their behaviors within the physical world. Animal-Speak will help you to attune to your animal totem and discover your hidden powers and skills as reflected by your specific animal totem. If you’ve always felt connected to animals and nature, this book is a must have!
One of my favorite things to do to receive messages from animal totems is to draw a card from the Animal Messages Card deck. This is a great way to meditate with a question or an issue that you might have and then draw a card and let that particular animal speak to you. This card deck contains 52 cards each beautifully illustrated and containing an inspirational message from the animal world. The book that is included provides you with even more spiritual wisdom!
Much love to you!
