Our energetic body is directly connected to our physical body. It’s important to listen to what our physical body tells us because it provides us with the gift of knowing whether something is right or wrong for us. When we experience this discord, we start to have awakenings. We begin to realize that we have gone off the path a little. Our body serves as a guidance system that we can tune into to receive very valuable information. There are some simple ways that you can tune into your body to find out how to stay balanced on your path. It all starts with using your body as a guidance system.
We are energetic beings having a physical experience. This means that our spirit resides within a physically manifested creation that allows us to have a sensory experience. We get to touch, smell, hear, see, and taste. Becoming more aware of the messages we receive through the physical experience is key in providing us with next steps for our path.
Examples of the body as a guidance system
Now, I want you to take a moment to imagine two different people…
The first one is a woman sitting on a couch watching television and eating potato chips. She’s very engrossed in the show and hardly moves from her spot. What can you imagine physically for this woman? Is she slender or overweight? Does she look happy or sad? Does her body look healthy?
The second woman is hiking on a trail. She stops here and there to observe nature. Plays in a nearby stream. Says hello to hikers walking by. What do you imagine physically for this woman? Is she slender or overweight? Does she look happy or sad? Does her body look healthy?
An article recently came out that discussed the consequences for people who sit all day. A study showed that people who sit all day at their jobs were 54% more likely to die of a heart attack. AND, it didn’t matter if those people exercised at one point in the day. The article can be found at http://health.yahoo.net/experts/menshealth/most-dangerous-thing-youll-do-all-day. What was astounding was the information about the need for standing instead of sitting. If you simply stand more often throughout the day instead of sitting, you decrease your chances of a heart attack. What is this telling us?
Movement is key! And the body let’s us know through producing symptoms…
I didn’t fully understand this until I started to make small changes and observed the positive results.
Sitting at a desk all day long working at a computer was how I spent most of my days. I would stand occasionally for jobs, but as the years went by, I could see a few things happening. My body started to feel more and more lethargic. And my health was starting to deteriorate. I suffered from allergies which often turned into infections.
Listening to the body as a guidance system
One day, I decided I was going to make small changes… add something healthy to my lifestyle and start to shift things and observe the results like a scientist. And so, I added an apple a day. I wanted to test the saying, “an apple a day keeps the doctor away.” Sure enough, something shifted. My stomach aches went away. I used to suffer from upset stomachs all the time. I researched the benefits to eating apples and found that the pectin in apples acts like a broom to our stomachs. It basically cleans your stomach out and helps things “move” through you.
I was so happy with those results that I decided I would try something else. I would get up every morning and pick some activity that just felt “right.” Some mornings I would turn on music and dance. Other mornings, I would find a local hiking trail and be in nature. Something else started to happen for me. I observed that during that morning routine, I was smiling and laughing. My body responded as well. My muscles became more defined. And I noticed that if I woke with a stuffy nose, as soon as I started moving with a little bounce to my step, my nose cleared up. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I suffered from allergies all my life. And always reacted to them by resting more, thinking that rest would help me get better. This simply was NOT the case!
I decided to have a health checkup done just to have my blood levels checked. I figured, I do this for my car, I might as well do it for myself! So I went in to have my blood checked. Something really neat happened that totally woke me up to why movement is so important.
Proof that movement awakens your energy
The morning I went in to have my blood pulled, I had danced around my living room with my dogs. I went in for my appointment just an hour after. When I sat down, the nurse grabbed my arm and stuck the needle into my vein and instantly, the blood filled the little vial. She looked up at me in disbelief. At first I thought something was wrong and asked what was up. But she just looked up at me and said, “Wow! I’ve never seen blood move that fast before. Your blood is so bright red and moving so quick!” I told her that I had just danced about an hour prior. And then it clicked for me… our blood thrives on movement and oxygen. In order to feel more alive, we must BE more alive.
The physical body really is a gift. It is a perfect system that responds to us in-kind. If we treat it well and follow it’s guidance, it will express that to us through health. There are things I do now that have changed my health so drastically that I could never go back to being the way I was. I didn’t realize how significant these changes had been for me until I started meditating and doing yoga.
Meditating helps you connect to your body as a guidance system
It was through meditating that I became quiet enough to observe slight shifts in my energy. I became more and more attuned to what my body was telling me. I received vital information that helped me learn how to listen and respond to what I was needing. Becoming quiet and empty provided a space for my spirit to shine through and help me find a peaceful balance.

Yoga helps you connect to your body as a guidance system
Yoga provided my body with both healthy movement and oxygen to revitalize. Through yoga, I could feel my mind and body connecting to my spirit. When you do yoga, you must be very attuned to what your body can and can’t do in that moment. You must be very present and listen to what your body needs. Practicing yoga regularly helped me to learn to appreciate the signals that my body provides me in a moment by moment basis. It really is better and faster than any computer out there.
Become mindful of what your physical body is telling you. See it as a gift and tell it THANK YOU for showing you signs along your path. Know that your spirit is directly connected to it and it is through that connection that you are able to attune to your needs. Practice being present with your body and letting it show you how to become more and more balanced.
